Tonight, we had the pleasure of welcoming Dyuti Basu, a Strategic Design Fellow at the Smith Business School, for an inspiring and hands-on workshop. Members got a chance to dive into the world of social media strategy, learning how to craft compelling campaigns and apply creative thinking through a mini case study. The session offered a glimpse into Dyuti’s brand-new Strategic Content course, launching in Fall 2025—a must-take for anyone interested in media, marketing, and digital storytelling! The workshop gave us a sneak peek of what’s to come in the course, and if tonight was any indication, it’s going to be packed with fresh insights and real-world applications.

What is the Importance of Social Media Campaigns?
Nothing puts your brand on the map faster than a memorable and fun social media campaign. They help you get your name out there, connect with your audience, and build a community that actually cares about what you’re doing. Whether you’re launching a new product or sharing your brand story, social media makes it easy to reach the right people, especially with all the targeting tools available. Plus, one of the best parts is that you get real-time feedback. You can see what your audience loves or doesn’t, and quickly adjust your approach. Campaigns also help build trust by showing the human side of your brand, like behind-the-scenes moments, customer shoutouts, influencer partnerships, or your values in action. With all the creative freedom that comes with platforms like Instagram and TikTok, you can really have fun telling your story and making a lasting impression!

My Favorite Social Media Campaigns
Social media campaigns have the power to completely transform a brand, sometimes skyrocketing a company to fame and boosting sales overnight. As someone who’s extremely passionate about marketing and always keeping an eye on standout campaigns, I love seeing how creativity, design, and planning work together to create something truly unforgettable. There are a few standout campaigns that immediately come to mind, ones that left a lasting impression and perfectly captured what makes social media such a powerful tool.

Mini Case-Study Workshop
During this interactive segment, we were asked to step into the shoes of a new social media intern for Babbel, a language-learning app similar to Duolingo. The challenge? Babbel was struggling to attract new users, and our assignment was to develop a fresh social media campaign to reinvigorate its online presence.

We kicked things off with a quick brand intro and a social media audit, diving into Babbel’s Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube to analyze their current strategy, branding, and audience engagement. Working in small groups, we compared Babbel’s online presence to competitors like Duolingo and Rosetta Stone, spotting gaps and opportunities.
From there, the ideas started flowing! Everything from campaigns featuring travel influencers and Babbel ambassadors, to collaborations with study abroad programs and universities. Some groups suggested creative incentive programs, like earning free months or a trip to the country you’re learning the language of. Others focused on building a stronger brand identity through consistent visuals, fonts, and tone, or creating POV-style content that showed how Babbel fits into real-life travel experiences.
We all came back together to present our pitches, which felt like a real-world brainstorm session and marketing workshop in one. The energy, collaboration, and creativity made it such a valuable learning moment. If we were really interns at Babbel, we’d walk into that pitch meeting with a strong understanding of the problem, and even stronger solutions!
It was an incredible opportunity to dive into what makes social media campaigns truly successful and apply that knowledge to a real-world scenario! With internship season just around the corner and so many aspiring social media marketing interns eager to learn, this was the perfect chance to get a hands-on preview of what goes into creating campaigns, brainstorming creatively, and collaborating with peers.
AMA would like to give a huge thank you to Dyuti Basu for sharing her expertise with us today! Her presentation was not only thorough but also packed with actionable insights and tips on how to create content that resonates and goes viral. We’re grateful for the knowledge she shared, and it’s definitely something we’ll carry forward in our future marketing endeavors.
